Happy Summer! For many kids across the United States, this time of year signifies a brief freedom from school. It is a great time for spending time playing with friends, going on family vacations, taking trips to the beach, playground fun, swimming, boating, camping and other outdoor activities. Regrettably, injuries do not take vacations and many kids receive serious injuries during the summer months. So much so that summer is recognized as “trauma season” among public health and medical professionals in the U.S. due to the increase in serious injuries and accidental deaths among children during these months.
Shriners Hospitals for Children® – On Track for a Safe Summer Live Event
My daughters and I had the pleasure of being invited, along with nine other “mommy bloggers” and their children, to the Shriners Hospitals for Children® – On Track for a Safe Summer Live Event in Sacramento, California earlier this week! Shriners Hospitals for Children® designed this event to help parents and caregivers ensure kids enjoy a happy, safe, injury-free summer by offering prevention tips and strategies.
I was excited to be asked to attend and share the great summer safety information with my readers. Shriners Hospitals for Children® is such a great organization that strives to achieve excellence in pediatric research and treatment. Many thanks to Shriners Hospitals for Children® for inviting me to this important event and sponsoring this post.
My kids love being outdoors, and summer is a time of energy and excitement when it comes to playing in the backyard, hiking, and swimming. We had such a wonderful time and learned some great tips and received lots handouts for having a fun and safe summer.
The kids went go through a series of interactive prevention stations designed to promote playground, swimming, boating, lawn mower and fire safety. Personally, I appreciated and benefited from each of the interactive stations and have learned more about how to prevent summer related accidents.
Interactive Prevention Stations
Here are some of the tips I learned at each station:
Safety Tip 1: Always wear sunscreen when outdoors.
Safety Tip 2: Never play on or around a lawn mower.
Safety Tip 3: Always wear a Coast Guard-approved, properly fitted life jacket.
Safety Tip 4: Never play with or near fire.
Safety Tip 5: Never swim alone or go near water without an adult present.
Safety Tip 6: Putting words into action on the playground.

When I was a kid, I was in a Shriners hospital. They wanted to keep me for a year…. I screamed so loud, they decided to let me go home. Great safety tips!
Looks and sounds that it was really interesting event. I have to check out the safety information on the Shriners Hospitals for Children website.
This looks like such a fun and interesting event and would be a great place to bring kids!
Those tips sound like common sense to me and probably to most adults. It is the children who must be taught all this just as we were.
Yes, that is what this event was for.
